Injection Therapy- Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Hyaluronic Acid Injections for osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common causes of joint pain worldwide. There is no cure but symptoms can improve with treatment. One treatment is hyaluronic acid injection therapy which is also known as viscosupplementation.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance found in the fluid in the joint. It acts as a lubricant and shock-absorber, helping joints move smoothly. In osteoarthritis, HA decreases in both quantity and quality, contributing to joint pain and stiffness.

Viscosupplementation involves injecting HA into the joint to help restore lubrication and improve mobility.

Benefits of hyaluronic acid (HA) injections?

  • Improved joint lubrication and shock absorption

  • Reduction of inflammation of the joint

  • Enhanced joint mobility

  • Stimulation of the body's natural production of HA.

*HA does not repair cartilage but by improving joint mechanics, symptoms can be relieved.

Who might benefit?

  • HA injections are more effective for those with mild-moderate arthritis. They are typically not effective in those with severe arthritis.

  • They can be an option for those wanting to avoid or delay surgery (such as a knee replacement)

  • They can be good for those who cannot tolerate or would prefer to avoid long term medication for pain.

  • They are a good alternative option to steroid injections. HA injections are not a drug, they have fewer systemic side effects compared to steroid injections.

Will I need to do anything alongside HA injections?

Yes! It is always recommended to combine any injection with physiotherapy exercises and lifestyle changes (weight loss, increased activity, stopping smoking etc).

How long do they work for?

Most people will start to feel a change within 2-4 weeks. The peak benefit is 4-8 weeks and for many the relief might last 3- 6 months.

Some patients will choose to have repeat injections 6-12 monthly.

Some people do not respond.
